Matthew was the most popular Gospel in the early church, widely read for its clear emphasis on Jesus' teaching. Drawing on its use as a teaching or discipleship manual, Craig Keener expounds Matthew as a discipleship manual for believers today. In his skilled hands, this first-century text becomes as relevant and contemporary as information downloaded from the Internet, while it challenges us with its divine perspective on how life ought to be lived. In this clear, incisive commentary, readers will find an introduction with background material concerning authorship, date and purpose, as well as a summary of important theological themes. A passage-by-passage exposition follows that focuses on understanding what significance the Gospel of Matthew had for its original readers in order to see its relevance for the church today. Students, pastors, Bible teachers and everyone who wants to understand the message of Matthew for the church will benefit from this excellent resource.

This Bible Commentary is excellent. I am very glad that I now have it in my library. I can reach right into my bookcase to receive great help in understanding certain portions of Scripture.

Scholarly work with powerful application
By Johnnyboy
This was the very first commentary I read through and I frequently go back to reference it. Keener's emphasis on the social-historical context of this Gospel is helpful yet concise. His passion for preaching is quite apparent in his expository that truly spoke into my heart, and convicted me in many areas of my life. Keener has a more in depth commentary on Mathew that would be better suited for those who are more academically minded; however, this commentary is still scholarly and will provide the reader with much incite.

Great commentary
By Michael D. Herrington
I like this whole conservative commentary series. It is not highly technical but brings to light many background cultural issues that helps to bring the Scriptures to life. The authors also bring relevant applications to today's Christian. It is also structured very well especially for daily Bible study.

She spends her nights sleeping beneath the cemetery’s Warrior Angel statue for protection, and her days battling the mean streets of Remington, Texas, hell-bent on discovering what happened the night her Mama disappeared. While Copper and her rag-tag group of friends find danger at every corner, two horrors are certain: her Mama’s really missing and someone’s after Copper, too.

In the tradition of The Lovely Bones and Room, Pennies from Burger Heaven tells a dark story through the eyes of a child. With wit and wisdom, Copper Daniels will steal your heart, then break it in two.

Stellar!
By April Redmon
In this gritty, touching story about Copper Daniels, a tough as nails, no-nonsense street kid in search of her missing mother, Marcy McKay delivers a book readers will find difficult to put down. Her poignant storytelling makes it equally hard to forget long-past the end of the story.

Being homeless isn't a piece of cake for anyone, but life is especially difficult for Copper and her flighty, troubled mother. By day they rely on the kind donations of strangers as they stand at the intersection in front of Burger Heaven restaurant, but as the day wears on Copper often ends up in knots from her mother's methods of getting by in the world on her own terms. Despite her mama's seemingly selfish choices, she always tries to make sure they have a safe place to sleep each night, even if 99 percent of the time it is beneath the statue of the Warrior Angel at the Eternal Peace cemetery. Copper finds some comfort there, tucked in among the Somebodies and the Nobodies, where beneath each headstone lies a story. At least until the morning she awakens to discover the mother that never leaves her side is missing.

The action is non stop from there as we follow Copper and her search for her mother through a world full of colorful and unique characters in a vivid and sometimes dark setting. McKay's ability to deliver suspense and tug at your heartstrings throughout is top-notch. The strong voice of this author commands a reader's attention.

Definitely a keeper.

I was hooked after the first two pages!
By Ellen P. Lafleche-christian
I was hooked after the first two pages of the book. After the first chapter, any thought of putting the book down were forgotten. Pennies from Burger Heaven made me see the streets and the people who live there through Copper’s eyes – they eyes of a girl that were both innocent and street weary at the same time. I loved getting that glimpse into her world and was fascinated by the life that she seemed to accept as normal. She had a real tenacity and strength that you wouldn’t expect from an eleven-year-old and the unique way she saw life and the people around her made this book an unforgettable story. The ending totally surprised me, and I never expected it to play out the way it did or for the story to leave me in tears.

Highly recommend you read this book now. Since it says that it’s Burger Heaven #1, I can only hope there will be another story soon.

Well-paced and Descriptive
By Norm Hamilton
Copper Daniels, an eleven-year old lives in a world few of us understand; that of homelessness and extreme poverty. To survive, she and her mother must overcome daily battles with hunger, inclement weather and, shall we say, less than exemplary people.

The story, written from the youngster’s perspective, is complete with a child’s view of the world, her own made-up names for people and places as well as her reality. When her mother becomes one of the “Disappeared” Copper sets out on a journey of discovery that exposes both friend and foe. Her only thought being, “The best I can hope for is to find Mama before Diablo does.”

From her home near the Warrior Angel statue in the Eternal Peace cemetery to the harrowing streets of “Paradise” the narrative of her encounters is well-paced and descriptive. To her dismay, she comes to the conclusion that, as she puts it, “Caring turns people in a Disappeared.”

The story is rife with unexpected twists and turns. The culmination of events came as a surprise to this reader, making it exciting to uncover.

I am unaware of author Marcy McKay’s background, but she has created a world in “Pennies from Burger Heaven” that is palpable and believable. One can feel the despair. The characters are well developed. Each scene comes alive with visceral acuity. I recommend “Pennies from Burger Heaven.”

Now that we've completed the course...
By D. Christie
Now that we've completed the course I would only recommend it in a co-op setting with high school students. I facilitated a high school level American History course this year using Stobaugh's American History book as our main text. Many times Stobaugh just brushes the surface or asks assignment questions that aren't covered in the text. The students must go outside of the book to look for answers. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is unusual. If your student isn't particulary motivated to read more than is required, he will likely be lost.

Another aspect we found a bit difficult was the essay quiz. If you are looking for a straight forward quiz that is simple to grade, you won't find it here. If you are willing to study a bit yourself and come up with your own grading rubric, you'll be fine. I often wrote my own quizzes instead of giving the quizzes in the teacher's book.

Stobaugh uses advanced vocabulary and covers many philosophers and their world views. I'm delighted that my kids have now heard the names of these philosophers, but we didn't get a lot more out of it than that. I used many of Stobaugh's choice of words as vocabulary builders. Here is an example from chapter 1: "Excessives of Enlightenment rationalism have sabotaged the certitude of classicism and Christian theism that so strongly influenced Western culture long before the formidable onslaught of the likes of David Hume." And also from chapter 1: "Christian schooling has invited Americans to a comfortable marriage of intellectualism and transcendentalism..." Understand that there was no other explanation of David Hume or transcendentalism, so without someone to explain it or unless you have an advanced student, these concepts will likely go over their heads.

We supplemented our class with history videos and we had a good year even with the difficulties we experienced with this text. I did appreciate the scope of events and issues that Stobaugh covered and especially appreciated his sensitivity to racial reconciliation.

Am impressive, full book
By Carol E.
James Stobaugh's new High school textbook "American History" is 384 pages of intense learning opportunity. This is a meaty book about America's past, and asks tough questions about our future.

The book is most definitely designed for the independent learning High School aged student. If your student hasn't done independent study in the past, you may want to consider also purchasing the Teacher's book to help you both transition to this style of learning. If you don't remember your American History, but would like to learn it, this would be a terrific book for an adult to study through.

The student book starts out with a Preface to prepare the student for the style of critical thinking and study they will soon come to expect from their daily lessons. The first lesson in Chapter one has one of the best explanation of the seven major Worldviews that I have ever read. This gives the student a basis for thought as the history of America is studied, debated, and questioned. The lessons are from a decidedly Biblical worldview, with thought given to how each person's actions affect those around them.

Each of the 34 chapters is divided into 4 lessons. I think that is wise, because sometimes your High School student is going to have questions, or want to look further into the topics and events from that week's lessons, and will relish having that 5th day of the week to accomplish this without getting behind. The Teacher's guide has an exam for each week. If your student has truly studied during the four lesson days, this will be a review, if not, you'll know they need to go back and re-do the week's lessons.

I also appreciated that the book's lessons begin with the indigenous people groups, and works its way slowly through the colonies, revolution, and eventually into modern day history and contemporary issues.

If you're wanting your student to learn, understand, and REMEMBER their American History, this is a book you'll want to use. This book covers the good and the bad of our history, and requires the student to think through the issues Americans were dealing with at the time, not just fill-in-the-blanks.

Overall, we are happy with this book
By Debra Brinkman
A while back, I posted a review of World History - Student. That set of books was the second year in a three-year high school history curriculum.

American History is the first year of that set. It comes as a student book (this product) and a American History - Teacher. The book is nonconsumable so you can use it with each of your children, a feature I really love.

The book, like others in the series, consists of 34 chapters, with daily lessons for days one to four, and a test/assessment for the fifth day. For an idea as to the scope of this study:

*Chapter 1, Natives of the New World, covers worldviews, Indigenous People Groups of North America, Indigenous People Groups of South/Central America, and Columbus, Conquistadors and Colonization.
*Chapter 34, Contemporary Issues Part Two, covers Euthanasia, Global Warming, Health Care, and Population Explosion.

With a total of 136 lessons (34 weeks times 4 lessons per week) this study obviously cannot cover everything that has happened in American history. It seems to do a pretty good job, however, of hitting most of the important topics.

So what does a "typical week" look like? Well, I'll pick one to talk about here, though I'm not entirely certain there is such a thing as a "typical week." Let's look at Chapter 20, "The Wild West."

*The first lesson is also titled "The Wild West" and it is a page of text by Stobaugh talking about the California Gold Rush, the role of the railroads, etc. The assignment involves reading a lengthy quote by Frederick Jackson Turner regarding westward expansion and discussing whether you agree with him, and what role other historical trends (military, economic, religious, etc.) had in developing the American character. The second half of the assignment is to write a brief history of your own town.

*The second lesson is "Native Americans" and it includes two pages of text about the various tribes in the West, Southwest and Northwest, also including a page-long excerpt from the autobiography of Geronimo. The assignment is first to summarize Geronimo's point of view regarding why whites and Native Americans did not get along. The second part of the assignment relates to what should have happened when Native Americans were located on valuable or vital land. Definitely thought-provoking.

*The next lesson on "Lawmen and Outlaws" is a single page, all text by Stobaugh. It talks about people such as Billy the Kid and Jesse James. The assignment relates to analyzing why Americans love to root for the underdog, even when that underdog is a convicted murderer.

*The final lesson is on Frances Willard, president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. This lesson is two pages, including a short bio by Stobaugh. The bulk of the reading is of the last formal speech that Willard made. The assignment relates to a quote about being followers of Christ disguised as lawyers, doctors, housewives, etc., and how that idea summarizes the life of Frances Willard.

*The assessment primarily reviews lessons 1-3, with slightly different discussion questions.

The student book contains the text and daily assignments. You need the teacher book for the answers (or possible answers) and weekly assessments (and those answers).

So, what did we think?

First off, the expected time to complete the lessons was a bit off. Usually the reading aspect of the assignment could easily be accomplished in the 20 minute timeframe, but the assignments frequently require far more than a few minutes. Especially as sometimes you need to do additional research to truly answer the questions in the assignment.

That's a good thing though, because if you were to spend 30 minutes a day for 34 weeks, you are only talking 85 hours of work, which is simply not enough "quality time" in my opinion for a full high school credit.

I also really question the choices of where to focus time. On the one hand, I think understanding the Civil War is critical in understanding a lot of American history, it seems a bit much to focus five weeks (nearly 15%) of the course to that topic, with a week on Antebellum Slavery, a week on causes of the war, a week on the war, and two weeks on reconstruction. I think these chapters are fabulous, don't get me wrong. But it is in stark contrast to the amount of time spent on other wars:

American Revolution (including the French and Indian War) - 2 weeks
The War of 1812 - a paragraph in one lesson, and brief mentions in a couple other lessons
Spanish American War - most of a chapter/week
World War I - 2 days
World War II - 2 days
Cold War - 3 days
Korean War - 1 day
Vietnam War - 1 day
War on Terror - 1 week

It isn't like I know what could change to make this better, but two days on World War II? It just seems a tad bit rushed.

Since the study does not necessarily take enough time, though, it isn't like I can't throw in an additional biography here or there if I plan this as a full course.

One thing we love is the focus on some of the more "Christian" history of the US. Things I wasn't taught in school. So there is information on the First Great Awakening, and on the Second Great Awakening. There are lessons that focus on people like Billy Sunday or Charles Fuller.

We also appreciate all the photos and charts. A note though, everything is black and white. I appreciate that this helps keep the costs down, and when there is something we think we need in color, it is a quick search to find an appropriate image online.

Overall, we are happy with this book.

Amazon customer reviews:

'An excellent book for any medical clinician... A valuble resource for anyone studying pre-hospital medicine and paramedic science'.

'This book has all you need to know in pharmacology without getting lost in the subject. Extremely helpful for all health care professionals who directly provide drugs for their patients. Especially excellent resource for paramedics'.

'... I was very impressed by the clarity and readability of the pages finding them to be set out well, using boxed areas, icons, bullet points and a case study approach within the chapters. Additionally the questions at the end of each chapter provided useful reflection and revision of my reading, and helped ensure that I remembered what I had read... and the many diagrams are clear and easy to understand...

The book groups drugs according to their pharmacological effects, their actions and the conditions they are used to treat which is away from the traditional systematic approach. It has certainly helped deepen my knowledge of the principles of pharmacology in a non threatening enjoyable way...'

Good Review of the Fundamentals
By Steven
I purchased this book in order to prepare for a paramedic class that I'll be attending this fall. The book, while several pages long, provides great detail for those who have no previous knowledge in pharmacology. While it is easy to read and understand, you may want to allow at least a month or two in order to understand most of the aspects it discusses. The book may provide more information than is necessary in order to prepare for a paramedic course but it is still provides a great resource to come back.

The Accidental Universe: The World You Thought You Knew, by Alan Lightman

With passion and curiosity, Alan Lightman explores the emotional and philosophical questions raised by recent discoveries in science. He looks at the dialogue between science and religion; the conflict between our human desire for permanence and the impermanence of nature; the possibility that our universe is simply an accident; the manner in which modern technology has separated us from direct experience of the world; and our resistance to the view that our bodies and minds can be explained by scientific logic and laws.

Behind all of these considerations is the suggestion--at once haunting and exhilarating--that what we see and understand of the world is only a tiny piece of the extraordinary, perhaps unfathomable whole.

Amazon.com Review
Guest Review of “The Accidental Universe,” by Alan Lightman

By Jon Kabat-Zinn

Jon Kabat-Zinn is the author of eight more books, including Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain and Illness and Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life.

He holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology from MIT , and is the founding executive director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Healthcare, and Society. He has also helped to organize dialogues between the Dalai Lama and Western scientists to promote deeper understanding of different ways of knowing and probing the nature of mind, emotions, and reality.

A Walden for our digital, cosmological, and quantum age from a modern-day Thoreau. Not since Fred Hoyle in another era (and universe) has anyone dared to cover such a sweeping domain, and no one so elegantly, so parsimoniously, and so personally. From the triumph of the Higgs boson to the underlying discomfort of multiverses, from the question of God to the erosion of embodied presence via digital self-distraction, Lightman explores with wistful irony, lyricism, and insight his relationship as a theoretical physicist, a cosmologist, a novelist, a humanist, and a human being to the ever-changing and mysterious interior and exterior universes we all inhabit, knowingly or not. Any one of these essays invites deep reflection. Together, they disturb, inform, inspire, and delight.

From Booklist
Theoretical physicist and novelist Lightman (Mr. g, 2012) presents seven elegantly provocative “universe” essays that elucidate complex scientific thought in the context of everyday experiences and concerns. In the title piece, he traces the great cosmological shakeup that has top physicists theorizing that our universe is but one of many “with wildly varying properties.” Lightman brings rigor and candor to his analysis of the coexistence of religion and science. He takes on our misperceptions about time and grapples with the “deep question” of why symmetry abounds in nature, from snowflakes to the Higgs boson. After blowing our minds with descriptions of “galaxies and stars so distant their images have taken billions of years to reach our eyes,” he wonders if we accept this realm as part of our understanding of nature. And in “The Disembodied Universe,” he considers the implications of our enchantment with the virtual cosmos at our fingertips. Ranging from ancient intuitions and calculations to today’s high-tech inquiries, Lightman celebrates our grand quest for knowledge and takes measure of the challenges our discoveries deliver. --Donna Seaman

Review

"Alan Lightman might be the only writer who can dance through not just one but seven universes in a book not much larger than a human hand.”
     —The Columbus Dispatch

"Engaging. . . . While this lively, lyrical book examines some of the major scientific thinking of our time, it also celebrates the human drive to make sense of it all."
     —Portland Press Herald

"Any reader will enjoy pondering, through well-organized and graceful prose, what can be objectively proven about the world in which we live and what remains a mystery."
     —The Boston Globe

"Lightman has an appealing humility and affection for the mysterious, and an even more attractive compassion for humans, with their short lives and big questions."
     --The Columbus Dispatch

“Lightman is one of the few physicists who can name-check the Dalai Lama, astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, Dostoevsky, and dark energy in the same work, while deftly guiding readers through discussions of modern physics and philosophy. Here he has composed a thoughtful, straightforward collection of essays that invite readers to think deeply about the world around them.”
     —Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Alan Lightman . . . has written not so much about cosmology as his title might imply but about our direct, subjective experience with it . . . . We are not observers on the outside looking in. We are on the inside too.”
     —New York Journal of Books

“This MIT physicist-turned-bestselling author is one of the nation’s top science writers, exploring the intersection of science and culture. That he used to teach physics in the morning, and creative writing in the afternoon is all the recommendation you need. . . . Lightman [is] an able and charming tour guide. . . . The Accidental Universe portrays a physicist who not only observes his environment, but interacts with it, as well.”
     —Portland Press Herald

“As he’s demonstrated in highly original novels like Einstein’s Dreams and Mr g, Alan Lightman possesses the mind of a theoretical physicist and the soul of an artist. . . . He offers intriguing glimpses of how the gulf we too often perceive between science and the rest of life might be bridged.”
     —Shelf Awareness

“Elegantly provocative. . . . Lightman celebrates our grand quest for knowledge and takes measure of the challenges our discoveries deliver.”
     —Booklist

Our small stature in a very big place
By John L Murphy
What this MIT physicist and humanist (he holds a joint professorship, and this leads as he notes crossing his campus to some mental adjustment as he bridges the gaps) brings to familiar Big Questions is a gentle sense of wonder tempered with a scientific rigor. Both qualities are enhanced by his humility, and he accepts that we may not be able to answer what some of his colleagues anticipate as the Unified Theory that explains (after the Higgs Boson) everything. Instead, he cautions us to keep balancing in a humane (if still rational and certainly secular) approach our dual capacity of exacting and verifiable measurement and very cautious speculation.

As these linked essays show, the universe can be conceived as alternately or respectively accidental, temporary, spiritual, symmetrical, gargantuan, lawful, or disembodied. He applies his life's moments gently to enrich his lessons. I like reading books for popular audiences about cosmology, so I found Alan Lightman's style (in an advanced copy for review) engaging and accessible. He brings in his daughter's wedding on the Maine coast, his beloved pair of wingtip shoes, the amazing hexagonal symmetry of a honeycomb, or the disturbing harbinger of a world where our young appear to be wired, shut off from conversation, and online all the time. However, as his last chapter predicts, even those who try to flee the virtual realm as it takes over our physical and spiritual worlds may find themselves shut off from yet another universe now evolving.

Provocatively, Lightman compares how insignificant we are, stuck in a minor galaxy on a middling planet in a marginal status, yet we have figured out so much about the universe that surrounds us, if not the next stage, which we may never be able to discern to our satisfaction, that of multiverses. He tells us that our little worlds on a similarly infinitesimal level may elude our grasp. He imagines us as captains of a ship, up on a bridge, unable to discern fully from our perch what tumult lies below deck.

This sort of deft analogy, modest and never drawing too much attention to itself, characterizes Lightman's approach. Unlike some of his colleagues who write such essays, he keeps the math to a minimum while accentuating the verbal and visual images that he hones to remind us of the sheer amount we know now about our origins, back to the first trillionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second. But, as we cannot penetrate that first moment of the Big Bang, that too stands to teach us of our own small stature, and how much the universe, big or small in these essays, continues to keep from our eager investigation. All the same, people such as Lightman inspire us to keep asking why.

His Thinking Mirrors My Own
By Timothy Haugh
Over the years, I have read many of Professor Lightman’s books. For me, his work is a mixed bag—sometimes great, sometimes no more than adequate. It is with great pleasure, therefore, that I can report The Accidental Universe to belong in the former category. This is a wonderful book.

Most readers are likely familiar with Lightman because of his fiction: Einstein’s Dreams, Good Benito, Reunion (a personal favorite), and others. This book, however, is a work of nonfiction. It is essentially a series of short meditations on the universe by this author who is, after all, both a professor of physics and the humanities.

Meditations is the right word, I think. These brief essays each have the universe as their topic but approach it from a different aspect. Most of the titles give you a clue. “The Temporary Universe” discusses entropy and change, “The Gargantuan Universe” discusses its size with we as a speck in the vastness, and “The Symmetrical Universe” talks about—what else?—symmetry and its intellectual attractiveness (as well as the importance of the Higgs particle).

The two best sections, though, are “The Lawful Universe” and “The Spiritual Universe”. In a sense, they give the underlying themes of the book as a whole. First, there are things about the universe that are intellectually understandable. Over the centuries, the scope of the things that we understand—that we have laws about—has widened considerably, as our conception of the universe itself has grown. (How many of us realize that it was only a hundred years ago that the brightest minds on earth considered the “universe” to consist of a static Milky Way galaxy?) Lightman’s scientific bent enables him to grasp our need for scientific laws quite clearly. On the other hand, Lightman’s also has another side, a contrarian side that looks at the universe differently, and this also comes through.

For lack of a better term, this is his “spiritual” side which is the second strong undercurrent in these pages. Though he remains basically atheist himself, he realizes the importance and the power of faith. I try to strike this balance myself and I find his thinking runs very close to mine. He certainly has the best words to say to the militant atheists I’ve read so far: “As a scientist, I find Dawkins’s efforts to rebut these two arguments for the existence of God—Intelligent Design and morality—completely convincing. However, as I think he would acknowledge, falsifying the arguments put forward to support a proposition does not falsify the proposition. Science can never know what created our universe…The belief or disbelief in such a Being is a matter of faith.” He goes on to say (after more kind words about Dawkins and his accomplishments): “What troubles me about Dawkins’s pronouncements is his wholesale dismissal of religion and religious sensibility…In my opinion, Dawkins has a narrow view of faith and of people. I would be the first to challenge any belief that contradicts the findings of science. But, as I have said earlier, there are things we believe in that do not submit to the methods of science” (p. 49 – 51). I have quoted this rather extensively but, as one who follows these arguments rather closely, I think Lightman has hit it on the head here. (Others, I know, will disagree.)

In the end, I was impressed by Lightman’s thinking here. He expounds easily on matters of science both historical and current. He also obviously considers the meanings of things deeply and speaks well on the subject. I recommend this highly to anyone interested in science and faith.

The Poetic Universe
By Apocryphile
Alan Lightman has a gift for lyrical, even poetic prose, as he ponders some of the biggest questions of existence in these collected essays. One is immediately struck by the fact that although a physicist and securely grounded in the real world, the author is able to temporarily transcend these boundaries and speculate on metaphysical, even spiritual, matters within the pages of this book.

As a scientist first and foremost, however, he finds it difficult to scale too high a philosophical ladder. Although he is willing to speculate on the larger questions such as consciousness, the meaning of existence, and the origins of our universe, he is still securely tethered to the "real" world of what our senses and their instrumental extensions can tell us. Though he states that he has no patience for people like Richard Dawkins who try to "prove" that God does not exist, he himself identifies as an atheist who has no patience for people who disregard the importance of the scientific method in seeking the truth. As a scientist, necessarily operating within the scientific paradigm and worldview, he is perhaps unable to lift these spectacles, if only to temporarily look at the world differently.

As the title of the book indicates, Lightman subscribes to the anthropic argument as the best explanation for why our universe is so amenable to life. This hypothesis is a valid and logically consistent one, but I think it is precisely here where the author makes his own unstated leap of faith. One of the hallmarks of a good scientific theory is not only how well it fits the facts, but if it accomplishes this in a parsimonious manner with the fewest assumptions possible. As he himself says, the only other logical possibility is that a creator of some sort is responsible, but the multiverse idea itself is obviously very far from a parsimonious explanation.

That this anthropic scenario must be invoked to avoid a creator is perhaps the best indication that cosmology has hit a brick wall. The best support so far for the multiverse comes from the close agreement of the observed microwave background radiation left over from the Big Bang with the theory of inflation. Since one necessary byproduct of inflation is the multiverse – it naturally “falls out” of the theory – many cosmologists are now beginning to seriously consider it. The multiverse is also consistent with quantum mechanics from a theoretical angle (the “many worlds” conjecture), and so also has this pillar of modern science backing it up - but this, needless to say, makes it no less strange.

What we are left with are two equally radical options – God or the Multiverse – and neither is more elegant than the other from a standpoint of economy. This is where I think the author’s professed atheism makes no sense. To state simply that one believes God does not exist isn’t any more useful than saying he does exist - from a scientific standpoint there isn’t enough evidence yet to make either claim. There is also the question of how far mathematics, and logic itself, can be applied here. In an infinite multiverse where every possibility is realized somewhere infinitely many times, one must still assume that the quantum laws, or at least the laws of probability, are valid across the multiverse and underlie everything. At the end of the universe, as I think the author himself would acknowledge, we are still left with awe and mystery.

Bought the book on a whim since it's been something that I've been interested in for a while. This is definitely an awesome introductory book that gives a thorough introduction both to typical herbs that one might find, their effects, and the traditional methods in which they were administered (teas, tinctures, etc.). There are also a handful of typical recipes for different conditions listed in the back of the book. Unfortunately, some of these recipes include herb ingredients that aren't listed in the book which is why I give this book 4 starts instead of 5. I'm sure there was a reason and this is an introduction book, but why list a herbal recipe in your book but leave half of the herbs in the recipe out of the book?

Still, this is a very good introductory book and the parts that were explained where explained very well.

Good book but not sufficiently edited/researched(at least for one herb)
By Amazon Customer
It's a good reference and some interesting recipes. Deducted stars for the entry on Red Root which is known as Amaranthus Retroflexus in the book but it looks like the author is talking about Ceanothus Americanus. Amaranthus Retroflexus can be medicinal but doesn't support the spleen. At worst, it might be laxative. Not a fatal mistake but it's wrong nevertheless. Not acceptable in a 'herbal apothecary' book. To author and publisher: Please note correction and vet the rest of the book!

Pros: Nice picture, some useful information
Cons: Not evidence based - there's no references or scientific data, not very in depth and I don't like the way it's organized.
