About the Author
Clive Hallett is an associate lecturer in design management at The London College of Fashion as well as lecturing at several other fashion colleges. He has worked in the fashion industry since 1972 and has been a freelance design consultant since 1978.

Amanda Johnston is an associate lecturer in design and product development on the BA Fashion Products course at London College of Fashion. She has worked as a freelance design consultant since graduating from Kingston University in 1982. Amanda is also an external assessor for the degree courses at the London Centre for Fashion Studies.

What a great reference book

This is a must have for all sewers. What a great reference book. Keep it by your machine. Take it with you when you go shopping. Pick it up when you have a spare minute. A wonderful sewing companion!! Thank you , I love it!!

Good price for beginners

The swatches are already organized for you! This is a great introductory book for the price. I am just a hobby self-taught sewer, so I found this to be really useful for ordering fabrics online. They are organized by material--animal, plant, or created. The silks are amazing. They also included different weaves of similar threads so that you can feel the texture and thickness. The pages are on a 3-ring binder, so they turn easily and fit for how thick they are.

Fascinating book! Between this, numerous trips to a local sewing chain store, and reading The Fashion Designers Textile Directory, I finally feel like I have some idea of what a pattern envelope is referring to when it says "twill suiting or gaberdine" and the like.

The best part of this book was getting to experience the swatches rather than just reading descriptions. The look and feel of fabrics is hard to describe, so it is great that there were actually swatches to go with the words.

An appreciated encore printing

I remember these Victorian silhouette illustrations on bold backgrounds from when I was young, and when we found it recently at the library I discovered that it has as much appeal to my four year old today as it did (and still does) to me. The objects the doctor extracts from a young boy's dramatically bloated stomach get progressively more outrageous as they go along, and the story ends with a funny twist. I'm delighted to find this 1966 Berkeley, CA classic available again in print.

Childhood memories

When I was a small child back in the late sixties, early seventies, my this was probably my favorite book in the whole world. When read in very expressive voices, it adds to the wonderful illustrations in this book. I still have my original copy from when I was a child, and hold it close to my heart. It thrills me to know that perhaps another generation will be exposed to this book, and its next phase begins.

Typical

DNF. I got to the 34% Mark and couldn't go further. There's nothing original here. Spoiled, rich, college girl who insists she isn't spoiled and does absolutely nothing to show that she isn't spoiled is our heroine. She throws herself at our hero in a club and then blames him for not taking her up on the invitation. Her narrative digs for sympathy. Nope, can't find any. Let me dig a little deeper. Nope, I'm fresh out of give-a-d@mn for our heroine. Our hero is a bit less well drawn. He had a rough life, made some extremely poor choices, and still pays for them. He's not exactly sympathetic either and I can't figure out why he would want to guard the bratty, entitled princess if not for the paycheck. He's a bit of a man-whore, but he's not doing the pursuing, merely accepting the invitations received and not pretending that those encounters are anything but sordid.

Aside from the stock characters, the content is riddled with errors. Plurals and apostrophes are not the same. Some words are misspelled (midriff, not mid-drift; lip-synch, not lip-sing). IOW, the book needs editing.

The final slam is the alternating narrative point of view. It's an affectation that I dislike more and more, because it's often not done well. In this book there isn't even the courtesy of the narrator's name to indicate whose POV you're reading. It doesn't take long to figure that out, but it is annoying.

My recommendation is to find another book that doesn't rely on worn out tropes and isn't littered with errors.

Finding Somebody to Love

Forgotten Bodyguard involves a senator's daughter, Chloe, who's in the midst of her dad running for President of the United States of America and Ian, a tattooed, smoking hot guy, who has lived his life in foster care with his brother Jake. Ian has a long wrap sheet of criminal activity from his youth and can't seem to shake the persona. Jake gives him a job in his security detail and that is where Ian first meets Senator Moore. He saves him from being shot at an open concert. This puts Ian high on Senator Moore's list of people to guard Chloe. The only problem is Chloe is a twenty-one year old UCLA student that doesn't want a baby sitter but she sure wants Ian!

Throughout the story we learn a lot about what makes up the two characters. Chloe lost her mother when she was young and because of her dad's political career, he had very limited time for her. He was one of those dads that gave gifts to show love instead of actions. Ian, although he looks tough on the outside, is very much a man looking for a woman to love him. He had a girlfriend once, but she died in his arms from an overdose, which apparently, he helped her get hooked on drugs. The two go through some rough times of testing each other, but in the end fall in love. This story has the wonderful style of Ali Parker of love with a little drama on the side. Another wonderful read and would recommend!

Great beginning...

To a new series of books. (Not a cliffhanger. ) Very well written and fast paced. The story had just enough action to add some excitement to the romance. The main characters were well developed, and fit their rolls in the story. Definitely recommend this book!

FINALLY, Someone who can teach public speaking!

As a college instructor of oral communication for ten years, I complained bitterly about the poor selection of books for beginning students--until now. This is the single best book of its kind on the market, bar none. In all my years, I've never had students brag on a book like this one: easy to read, well-organized, thoughtful, practical, visually attractive, and substantive. My best compliment is that I can teach three times the material in half the time just by using this text--and people understand it! I can't brag enough on the author's work. This is phenomenal. ANYONE who wants to master the basics of public speaking should read this cover to cover. The principles and techniques Mr. Gregory describes are effective, powerful, and described in a simple way. BRAVO! I'll recommend this to everyone.

An exceptional guide to achieving a lot more in life

I was very skeptical when I heard about life-changing books, but since reading this book, I am amazed at the huge pozitive effect it is having on my life. Peter J. Daniels comes from a poor family but that has not stopped him from becoming a very successful person. This book taught me how to create opportunities rather than waiting for them to happen. It is easy to read and understand and it also gives practical examples of how having the right attitude can do a lot more than just favourable circumstances. I wish I read this book when it was first printed and I am amazed at how accurate are the principles described by Peter J. Daniels. It's obvious that God gave Peter J. Daniels a lot of wisdom and I want to thank Mr. Daniels for sharing it with us in this high above average book.

Ian Heywood is a freelance consultant and Director of the Ideas Academy Ltd. Sarah Cornelius is a Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Aberdeen, specializing in adult and online learning. She was previously an Associate Lecturer for the Open University and taught GIS at Manchester Metropolitan University and the Free University of Amsterdam.

Steve Carver is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Leeds where he is Director of Taught Postgraduate Programmes including Leeds’ successful MSc in GIS. Best organization of all introductory GIS texts

This book has the best organization of all the GIS texts I've read. Other texts have either too little or too much on some topics (especially GIS project management and GIS analysis). This one has an excellent balance. A little more on data sources would have been nice. The British authors use a few terms American students won't recognize, but it reads very well. I'm recommending it right now over other overviews of GIS.

Excellent Introductory Level GIS book

This book introduces the basic principles of GIS from the perspective of a new user. Topics are covered with enough depth so that the book will also be beneficial to longer-term users. The writing style, graphics and case studies are presented in a simple and easy to read format. The book could be used as a text for a course or read by anyone interested in learning the fundamentals behind GIS technology. In 1926 Theodore "Tiger" Flowers became the first African American boxer to win the world middleweight title. The next year he was dead, the victim of surgery gone wrong. His funeral in Atlanta drew tens of thousands of mourners, black and white. Atlantans would not grieve again in comparable numbers until Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in 1968. Flowers, whose career was sandwiched between those of the better-known black boxers Jack Johnson and Joe Louis, was not America's first successful black athlete. He was, however, the first to generate widespread goodwill among whites, especially in the South, where he became known as "the whitest black man in the ring." he Pussycat of Prizefighting is more than an account of Flowers's remarkable achievements - it is a penetrating analysis of the cultural and historical currents that defined the terms of Flowers's success as both a man and an athlete. "The whitest black man in the ring," middleweight Tiger Flowers was a wildly famous world champion in the 1920s. Historically situated between two archetypal black champions--flamboyant, reviled Jack Johnson and credit-to-his-race Joe Louis--Flowers gets little attention from boxing historians these days. But, as Kaye argues, his life story says much about the complexity of race in sports and beyond. Flowers, widely characterized as a charming gentleman, was held up as a role model by many in both the white and black communities, while some of his black peers considered him a prototypical Uncle Tom. Although Kaye focuses on Flowers' life and the public response to his career in his native Georgia, readers also learn much about the fascinating history of boxing in black America. The slow pace and professorial tone will turn off those accustomed to a more accessible style, but this textured portrayal of the Jim Crow South and one of its black heroes makes a significant contribution to the history of race relations. If you are hungry for information on "Tiger" Flowers only be
prepared for a snack. The actual information concerning Mr. Flowers if put back to back probably covers 15 pages.

A good pussycat

Professor Kaye's book is about the dilemmas experienced by black athletes,
not an exhaustive account of every punch landed by Tiger Flowers and his
contemporaries. As a study of race relations in the 1920s and black life in
Atlanta, it seems to me that it succeeds admirably. The book is clearly
written and the illustrations are revealing.

I found this book interesting not only for its overview of the life and career of Tiger Flowers but for the broader look at how athletes, especially black athletes, had to cope with the pressure of the public eye in the South in the early 20th century.
