A Simple and Passionate Guide to Wine

Finally, someone has applied the KISS principle to understanding wine. In this marvellous and eminently readable little book, the author has distilled the art of wine-making, tasting and blending down to the simple basics for the wine lover who wants to understand these things without being blinded by jargon and complexity. Mr. Desautels obviously loves everything about wine and wine making and conveys his passion to the reader. You will go back to this book again and again as a reference as you explore the adventures that wine has to offer. Good Job!

Earning their keep in the squalid boardinghouse run by Vita's father, the two (along with other relatives) are more or less confined to Prince Street in Manhattan, where they are subject to a horrifying array of abuses and privations. Deeply in love with Vita by the time he is 16 and determined to earn enough to marry her, Diamante signs on with a railroad building crew and unwittingly begins four years of involuntary servitude under conditions that Mazzucco describes in unsparing detail; this underrepresented corner of the East Coast immigrant experience feels as fresh here as it is brutal. Vita, meanwhile, survives three years in reform school and betrayal by a man who seduces her. The narrative throughout is lively, deeply affecting and complex, involving dozens of striving minor characters, some of whom turn to crime. Four-time novelist Mazzucco also interjects nonfiction chapters that relate her search for family members in Italy and the U.S., adding a resonant sleuthing element that further distinguishes this literary take on early–20th-century Italian-America and enduring love. Mazzucco's intermittently commanding and moving epic about the Italian immigrant experience tells the story of two children from a rural village in southern Italy amid the fetid slums of New York, circa 1903. Diamante, aged twelve, is the author's paternal grandfather, and Mazzucco mixes fact with fiction in an attempt to imagine the life of his nine-year-old cousin Vita, a girl "with a great mass of dark hair and deep dark eyes." Some of the more factual sections flag (such as those describing the Italian campaign in the Second World War), but in the early, imaginative parts the narrative is full of pungent fictional details, like Vita in her boarding house making artificial flowers, and Diamante loading bodies on a cart at a funeral parlor and measuring them for coffins.

When the two increasingly turn to each other for comfort, Vita's father harshly intervenes, and Diamante leaves for Ohio, where he spends years engaged in backbreaking work. Vita, meanwhile, feisty and reckless, opens a restaurant and makes a fortune but longs for the unique connection she shared with her first love. Mazzucco won Italy's Strega Prize for this lavishly detailed novel, which also incorporates nonfiction chapters about her family history. Wonderful book ! I could not put it down. A tale written in an unusual manner and especially exciting because my grandparents lived 5 blocks from 18 Prince street. Weaves the characters over a span of 50 years and their relationaship with each other.

He previous work for Osprey includes Men-at-Arms 305 The Russian Civil War (2) White Armies. He is married and lives in Moscow.

Not the best guide to understanding the Red Army during the RCW, but I got it for the color uniform plates which are very nice.

Good place to get started

The RED ARMY is a good hastely review of the RCW from the Red Army view. I recommend it to all. However, some of the information is incorrect and OOB chart are wrong. The book is basically an extremely edited version of the Soviet encyclopedia "Civil War and Military Intervention in the SSSR". Many of the entries in Red Army are from the encyc. word for word and sometimes the best info is left out or conclusions incorrect. Granted the Osprey format does not have a lot of room for text. Its companion the White Army is more detailed where the Red Army is terrible general in detail. If you could see the source for the info you would understand what has been left out. I liked the book, but was left with more questions than when I started.

Five Ancestors Monkey

Monkey is a book for the wittiest minds.

This book is the second book in the mind racing series called the Five Ancestors. To read these books, you have to think about every little thing. It makes the book the hardest to put down. This book is going to become super popular. You better read this awesome brain thriller.

This story is about five monks and their temple that gets destroyed by a so called traitor monk. The young monks fled the temple and went their different ways. But four of them meet up again to fight the so called evil one. In the book the monks are also looking for a relative because they're orphans. This book is filled with action, mystery and more. At the start you might think it's only action but if you do, you are wrong.

This series is written by Jeff Stone a good writer. One thing that is different about his series is that in each book, the same thing happens but in a different character's mind but still different. Another thing is in each book it switches from the main character to the so called traitor and his men. It makes you think even more.

I hope your brain is up for the challenge to read this book and series. By the way, the first book is called Tiger.

What an awsome book!!! In The Monkey, it introduces Malao, the monkey-styled monk. After the Grandmaster's death, he sets out into the forest and discovers a new friend, the white monkey. When Malao heads back to the Cangzhen Temple, he finds Fu, and they steal the dragon scrolls. Together, they flee to a village and then the Shaolin Temple. During their travels, many secrets begin to unravel.......

I hope that The Snake will be just as good!!

My son LOVED this book!!

My son received this book and Tiger (5 Ancestors) for Christmas. Both he and I read them and loved them! My son is so hard to please when it comes to reading books. And besides the Harry Potter books he doesn't find a whole lot of other books he really likes. He liked these so much that we are anxiously awaiting the release of Snake (5 Ancestors), to be released in March.
