Excellent Resource

I'll update this book as I work through it more. I will start off saying that the book difference between 2nd and 3rd editions is a vast improvement in terms of clarity and order. The information is similar in both books, but it is arranged better.

There are three books that are most used in my library. Between all three of these, I can always find a good answer. They are Stimson for basic subjects, Skolnik for more advanced and this book for the Radar Analysis. In this book, the emphasis is on analysis and predicting radar performance. Currently, I work modeling and simulation but have done algorithm analysis in the past.

The book has Matlab code that is downloaded from the publisher site. The code is well written for the purpose, but not useful for deeper system analysis. This book will get you on the write path. It's not going to give you all the answers. You're going to have to take it the rest of the way. But, this book will get you in the right direction providing the needed information to begin. This is a very advanced topic in my opinion. The author does a good job getting the point across. But, you'll definitely have to get your knuckles bloodied to get it.

As stated, I'll add more as I get through the book. So far it is a highly recommended purchase.

About the Author
Peter Leoni graduated in 2003 with a PhD in mathematical physics and then stumbled into the fascinating world of finance. He started his professional career in Belgium working for KBC Asset Management as a risk manager, modelling equity and interest rate derivatives. Later on he moved into ING as a front office quant on the exotic derivatives desk. In 2007 he switched his career path toward commodities with a particular focus on energy modelling. He spent four years in the trading unit of GDF Suez in Brussels and then worked for a private fund in Geneva, Macquarie Bank in London and currently for the London/Geneva office of a privately owned trading firm. He also holds the position of visiting professor for the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium.

A good book let down by poor attention to detail

First the bad. Others have noted some of the more specific mistakes this book makes, but there is a constant problem with where decimal points are placed, and especially with how gun calibres are stated. For example, in talking about the proposal to arm the Jagdpanther with a 128mm gun, the imperial measurement is given as a .5", rather than 5" gun. When reviewing the Italian light CV 33, it says, (and I quote) "a water-cooled 0.2 inch (6.5mm) machine gun that proved so catastrophic that it was soon replaced by a 3.5 inch (88mm) Fiat 18.35 twin machine gun".

Putting a twin 88mm machine gun on a CV would take some seriously impressive engineering!

But it keeps going on, a 3 inch gun could actually be referring to a 75mm, 76mm, 76.2mm or even a 77mm. In fact the reference to the Sherman calls both the original 75mm and the upgunned 76mm versions 3in guns in the same paragraph!

In a book about weapons this can only be called sloppy and is a stain on what would otherwise be a very impressive work.

Now the odd: I do not know the author, but this as credit is given to translators I'm assuming this was originally a German work. I say that as because while I have heard of certain German vehicles such as the RSO tractor referred to as 'crawlers', this is the first time I've ever heard either the US M4 High Speed Tractor or the M29 Weasel referred to this way. I want to make it clear that the translators have done an excellent job, but seeing this is just a little strange to English readers.

While the book does an excellent job of choosing which weapons to review, I confess that one omission confounded me. After reviewing the 8cm or 81mm mortars of most armies, the author then goes on to do the same of the Soviet army. I would have though that if only one mortar was going to be included, it would be the Soviet 12cm mortar.

Now, the good: In about 300 pages devoted to weapons, with most pages having 2 weapons, probably somewhere in excess of 500 of the most important weapons of WW2 are covered in a handy, well printed, and astonishingly inexpensive book.

Now, lets be clear: are you looking for an in depth analytical review of the development, testing, battlefield impact and upgrades of anything from the Lee-Enfield .303 to the Panther tank? This book isn't for you! You need to go and get the specialist books that abound on such subjects.

This provides a few paragraphs on the development, use and impact of anything from handguns (usually one per major army of the war) to aircraft carriers. Most weapons get half a page, a few selected weapons (such as the Sherman tank) get a two page spread.

This is an introduction and nothing more. Its value lies in the fact that so many weapons (especially armoured vehicles and aircraft) are side by side and you can see the wartime development of these weapons in a single volume.

For the cost and number of weapons systems reviewed, this should be a 4 star book (the only 5 star book I know of in this field is Chris Bishops Directory of WW2 Weapons, now long out of print I think, and while it is far larger, even it managed to lose the chapter on Allied Destroyers!). Its inability to get weapons calibres right (a rather important consideration when talking about weapons, I'd have thought) reduces it to 3 stars.

Well Done Review of World War II Weapons

Rarely will you find so many different weapon systems covered in one book. The author is German so the text appears to have been translated into English leading to sloppy prose at times, but the wide coverage, excellent illustrations and a decent level of technical and historical detail makes up for it. The typical weapons book includes weapons from Japan, the US, Germany, Great Britain and the USSR, but this book also includes systems from France, Poland, Switzerland, Italy and others. Tons of interesting content at a very reasonable price makes this a nice addition to your WWII library.

This is a very excellent book. It covers weapons from small arms to aircraft carriers. The detail and illustrations are good. Since entire books have been written about many of these weapons, this book does not have all of the possible detail, but the level of detail is better than we should have a right to expect for a book with such a wide scope. Furthermore, it is very inexpensive. Highly recommended.

Excellent book

This is an excellent follow-up to the previous books, blending nearly seamlessly with the general story and tone. The characters develop naturally, although it is likely that if by chance you didn't read the previous novels, you may have dangerous holes in your knowledge of how they came to be who they are : what holds certain characters together, and what drives them. On the other hand, it is only in this book that some of these things are finally resolved.

While the book could certainly end the series, the ending provides not only a certain closure, but leaves room for another installment. Additional installments could be primarily mystery, as the conflict between major players continues, or as some major players continue in their roles, or the series could end very conclusively in a single, short romanc

This book which narrates the involvement of an autistic boy is a reflection of a society that is filled with fear. As much as we attempt to protect ourselves, there are always loopholes that can be taken advantage of in order to intrude and invade our lives. In a world of advanced technology, these things are not far-fetched. This is a remarkable book which focuses primarily on the psychological shift of its characters. Undeniably,
the story events make it possible for its characters to unfold their deepest intentions towards the end. It is an intriguing story.

About the Author
Charles Williams (1909–1975) was one of the preeminent authors of American crime fiction. Born in Texas, he dropped out of high school to enlist in the US Merchant Marine, serving for ten years before leaving to work in the electronics industry. At the end of World War II, Williams began writing fiction while living in San Francisco. The success of his backwoods noir Hill Girl (1951) allowed him to quit his job and write fulltime. Williams’s clean and somewhat casual narrative style distinguishes his novels—which range from hard-boiled, small-town noir to suspense thrillers set at sea and in the Deep South. Although originally published by pulp fiction houses, his work won great critical acclaim, with Hell Hath No Fury (1953) becoming the first paperback original to be reviewed by legendary New York Times critic Anthony Boucher. Many of his novels were adapted for the screen, such as Dead Calm (published in 1963) and Don’t Just Stand There! (published in 1966), for which Williams wrote the screenplay. Williams died in California in 1975.

Amusing Backwoods Tale 'Bout Moonshine And Politicking

Charles Williams, the 1950’s suspense author, was best known for his thrillers, particularly nautical thrillers, such as Dead Calm, the Scorpion Reef, The Deep Blue Sea, and Talk of the Town. He is not the same author as the Charles Williams who wrote theological and philosophical treatises at the turn of the century, although internet searches undoubtedly fail to distinguish between the two great, but unrelated, authors.

In addition to suspense thrillers, Charles Williams also wrote a handful of Southern comedies in the vein of Huckleberry Finn and Dukes of Hazard. Told in the backcountry voice of an eight-year-old and never leaving that voice, Uncle Sagamore’s Girls is a humorous look at the adventures of Billy’s Pop and his Uncle Sagamore in Blossom County. Uncle Sagamore is one of those clever fellows who hides behind a caricature as the town buffoon. He has been making moonshine for many years, but lately things have been getting too hot with the law and all. Through a series of hijinks, he uses his moonshining know-how to effect the county election for Sheriff.

Williams does a great job of getting the backcountry voice of the narrator, but this story might have been better as a short story or novelette rather than a feature-length tale. Although amusing, in the end, it was a little thin on plot.

This book has been long out of print in English. It was apparently allowed to lapse after the 1959 edition sold out. It is now a collector's edition.
If you read French you can order a copy in French on Amazon.fr, for 19 Euros; but no English edition seems available anywhere! The French title: "Aux Urnse, le ploucs!"
In brief, Uncle Sagamore and His Girls continues characters from an earlier Williams book with Uncle Sagamore. High camp comedy in the guise of suspense.

The map has contours at 20m intervals and relief shading. An overprint highlights numerous hiking paths, indicating seasonally closed routes, hiking time in both directions, difficult passages, sections with chains or ladders, etc. The maps also show cycling and ski routes, places of interest, various types of accommodation: hotels, campsites, shelters and mountain refuges, etc. It has a WGS84 grid showing latitude and longitude at intervals of 2'. Multilingual map legend includes English, otherwise description of places of interest is in Czech only.

The High Tatra Mountains attract hikers and climbers from all over Europe.

Very good detailed map

Very good detailed map, it helps planning and finding the trails that you want to use. The maps at the rest areas are good too, but they are mostly in Slovak and German. Sometimes in English too.

Map is OK in detail, I'm a little spoilt ...

Map is OK in detail, I'm a little spoilt after using UK Ordinance Survey. The paper is extremely flimsy, not ideal as a hikers map.
