A very good book

The book gets its objective: to inform managers, academics, students, consultants, about supply chain management (SCM) key success factors. The book is very clear and uses the tipical management language with focus on logistics and supply management terms. Because of the readers segment focus (managers, consultants), the book doesn't use mathematical models but shows many examples of supply chain management good practices, all obtained from firms operating in diferent countries.
The introduction gives an overview of the SCM, the following chapters devolop the concepts and methodologies, about the SC integration (pull-push approach), network planning, customer value, global issues, among others.

As a supply chain expert for more than 10 years, I found this book abit academic and not based on practical truth.
Obviously not covering all elements of supply chain but giving more theoritical information instead. Given examples are more unique to those companies. It should better to give clear guidance against practical concerns with necessary methodologies.

Loss Distributions

This book, part of the Wiley Series in Probability and Mathematical Statistics is writen for the fitting of probability distribution models to data relating to losses in the insurance industry. A necessary prerequisite for the understanding of this book is a university course in mathematical statistics. This is an advanced book utilizing higher mathematical formulas and functions. It covers models for random variables, statistical inference, loss distributions, and applications. It is a very useful book for those interested in theory and who are competent in advanced functions.

An Excellent Early Book

I have used this book actively in actuarial and quantitative finance work since it was first published. I've found it invaluable. I've not given it 5 stars only because it has been improved in Klugman's later book on the subject.

As the first reveiw mentions, you will need to be familiar with mathematical statistics to use it. Not too high a hurdle for those needing what this book has. The appendix on loss distributions is superb -- it is the cheat sheet I wanted and didn't have to create. Klugman has since had some substantial updates with Wilmot that cost a lot more than this fine old book. You'll get a lot of mileage out of this earlier work, but the updates have quite a bit more at the price of steeper math climbing.

Full disclosure: Stuart was one of my professors at University of Iowa, and Robert Hogg was there as well at the time.

A cult classic

According to the publisher, Seconds is a cult classic. I must belong to the wrong cult because I wasn't familiar with it until it appeared in a new edition.

Should Wilson leave his life behind? Should he start again? He gets along with his wife but passion, even affection, has long disappeared. He rarely hears from his daughter. His job at the bank provides him with a comfortable living but its routine nature is less than satisfying. It's a difficult decision to make but, as someone tells him, "there never was a struggle in the soul of a good man that wasn't hard."

These questions arise when Wilson (who isn't yet known by that name) gets a call from a dead friend who recommends a service that offers its clients a rebirth. Wilson doesn't quite understand what the service is all about, but his friend arranges an appointment and Wilson keeps it. The firm provides Wilson with a faked death complete with a corpse that passes as his own, then gives him a new appearance, occupation (artist, complete with a fine arts degree, portfolio, and solid reviews), and residence.

Reinventing oneself as a completely new person, leaving the old self behind, is an inviting fantasy, but Wilson learns (and this, I think, is the story's point) that it isn't as pleasant as we imagine it to be. It isn't easy to "cast off all the old associations and memories on which he had become accustomed to depend." In fact, once Wilson is "dead," he defies the rules by investigating his old life as others saw him. Unsurprisingly, he's not pleased with what he learns, or with the knowledge that he is so little missed. The fate of those, like Wilson, who don't follow the rules, who don't adjust well to rebirth, is the story's kicker.

If Seconds is indeed a cult classic, I can understand why. Soylent Green is something of a cult classic for similar reasons: there's a sort of irony in the surprise ending and the story can be seen as a commentary on the true value of human life. Seconds sends additional messages: Dreams don't always come true, particularly when the dream isn't yours to begin with. Originally released in 1963, and made into a movie starring Rock Hudson in 1966, David Ely's short science fiction book has been rereleased in 2013, and feels destined to be remade into a scifi summer blockbuster. While at times the novel feels very dated, there are many themes in the book that resonate with today's reader and everything going on in the world.

Antiochus Wilson has the classic sixties life: a decent job which he has done well in and climbed the ranks, making a decent wage; at home he has a wonderful and dutiful wife; a daughter who has grown up and is living elsewhere now; but he is bored with his life. He has a couple of hobbies, like painting sometimes in the garage, or taking his boat out, but otherwise he's just fed-up with everything. So when he gets the address and note that will change his life, he jumps at the opportunity.

Skipping out of work on lunch, he heads to the clandestine address on the other side of town. He finds himself in a strange warehouse where a stranger tells him to put on overalls and dirty himself up a bit. Then they head to another destination incognito and so starts the first minute of his new life. Antiochus "Tony" Wilson is being given a second, new life. Agreeing on an expensive package, he is killed off; a perfect cadaver left in his place, while he undergoes reconstructive surgery and comes out a new, handsomer man. A new life is created for him: a successful artist, with a new home in California. He is famous, people love him, especially the young models who post nude for him. What could be better?

Except Antiochus Wilson, for some reason, can't let go of his past; can't let go of his wife, or his daughter whom he rarely saw.

Seconds, in some ways, feels like a modern James Bond movie, where women play minor secondary characters, serving the men, yet everything else feels current and meaningful. The book plays around with the concept of identity and who one really is, and the true power of family. The company that gives these men second, new lives was conceived as a brilliant breakthrough that every man would want, but that seems not to be the case.

Are you frustrated with your life? Tired of your boring, mundane existence? Ever wish you could chuck everything and start over? Seconds is the story of a man who does just that, and lives to regret it.

Seconds' protagonist (whom we know only by his adopted name of Wilson) procures the exclusive services of a mysterious organization, which, for a price, creates new lives for its customers. After carefully arranging the demise or disappearance of a client, this organization then surgically alters that client's appearance. After a long period of convalescence and physical training, the client is provided with a new identity and alternative lifestyle.

Most clients quickly adapt to their new lives, but some, like Wilson, have a harder time. Wilson longs for the life he gave up, but finds, upon investigation, that he is not really missed by his family and acquaintances. The organization, which depends upon secrecy for survival, cannot tolerate such backsliding and brings Wilson back into the fold. Eventually realizing that his old life is in fact over, Wilson blithely resigns himself to the new, only to discover he has forfeited both. The brutal ending, while expected, is still shocking, primarily because Wilson doesn't see it coming.

Seconds is a tight, disturbing little book, one which proves the old adage, "Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it." After finishing, you'll probably conclude that your present life, no matter how humdrum or challenging it may be, is not so bad after all.

About the Author
Peter De Jong, Ph.D., is a professor of social work at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He has been an outpatient therapist, case worker, and led trainings and consultations with mental health clinics, family service agencies, juvenile corrections programs, and schools. In addition to co-authoring (with Insoo Kim Berg) two earlier editions of INTERVIEWING FOR SOLUTIONS, he has written several articles and book chapters on solution-focused therapy. Peter continues to develop new practice tools and therapy and training manuals, and to conduct research on practice and how new practitioners acquire a solution-focused outlook and skills.

Insoo Kim Berg, M.S.S.W. is a co-developer of the solution-focused approach and is the director of the Brief Family Therapy Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Many of her 10 books and over 35 papers have been translated into 14 languages. Among her books are FAMILY BASED SERVICES, WORKING WITH THE PROBLEM DRINKER (co-author Scott D. Miller), BUILDING SOLUTIONS IN CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES (co-author Susan Kelly), and CHILDREN'S SOLUTION WORK (co-author Therese Steiner). great introduction to SF

In the year 2000, this book was my first acquaintance with the solution focused approach to helping people. I had heard from a collegue (who is also a management coach) about solution focused working and, although I thought it sounded promising, I remained a bit skeptical. However, from the very moment I started reading 'Interviewing for solutions' my attention was firmly captured. Two chapters later I was practically sold. The approach is very clearly explained and the many dialogues in the book are really excellent (especially those by Insoo Kim Berg). After reading this book I started reading and learning more and I began using solution focused working in my practise as a coach and consultant. With peasure and success.

Excellent Book on Interviewing--Period!

Although solution focused-brief therapy is considered a paradigm, this book could very well be used in any introductory, microskills class, and it should.
The authors put forth a paradigm that is easy to learn (yet technique is perfected with much experience),and it places focus on the client's "non-problem" life. This is important because what we tend to focus on tends to increase.
The authors present SF in a way that is very empowering to both the therapist and the client. For the therapist who is interested in genuinely helping people, this will work, but you cannot use this approach and have an ego-issue w/regard to being an "expert." Rightly, the client is the expert on his/her own life.
A first-class text, and a keeper!

The explosive era in both Irish history and Yeats's poetry justify the length of the second volume of Oxford historian Foster's masterful life of Yeats. Again Foster approaches Yeats's memoirs with skepticism, shrewdly and scrupulously applying the historical facts to Yeats's self-made image and his poetry. The result adds a unique, superb perspective on Yeats's poetic treatment of the Easter Uprising and subsequent civil war, his eventual disenchantment with the new Irish Free State and the restless philosophical questing of his last years, up to his death just before Ireland's break from Great Britain in WWII. Following Responsibilities in 1914, Yeats had hoped to start a domestic phase in his life with his marriage to Georgie Hyde-Lees and his homesteader purchase of Ballylee castle. Instead, this time of upheaval saw him apotheosize two martyrs, Maude Gonne's husband in "Easter 1916," and Great War casualty Robert Gregory, in "An Irish Airman Foresees His Death." Roy Foster is Carroll Professor of Irish History at the University of Oxford and a fellow of Hertford College. His books include Charles Stewart Parnell: The Man and His Family, Lord Randolph Churchill: a Political Life (OUP, 1981), Modern Ireland 1600-1972, Paddy and Mr Punch, and The Irish Story: Telling Tales and Making It Up in Ireland. This is, without any hesitation, the best, most readable, and most comprehensive Yeats biography that I've ever read, and the combination of comprehensive and readable is a master-stroke in itself. This poet has been my passion for going on five years, and the gift of having this book in existence is inexpressible.

Meticulous and Inspired

This book may be much better than four stars but to be honest I stopped reading after about half way. This was not because of any fault of the book, simply because my interest was not sustained. There are some things about Yeats I understand and some things I do not. I understand his love of the land and of tradition, I understand his interest in the past and Irish mythology, and I understand his promotion of Irish cultural life, the energy he put into the Abbey Theatre, and his carefully measured but at times passionate support for the independence movement. I also have an interest in how the occult becomes a constant theme in Yeats' poetry and his interest in the relationship between image and truth, 'How can you know the dancer from the dance?'

But for me the real interest in Yeats is his struggle to arrive at the kind of plateau he seems to have arrived at by the mid 1920s, from which point he seems to repeat old themes, and whatever there is that is new and further refined somehow ceases to engage me.

For me the vital chapters of this book are those that deal with the sudden re-arousal of Yeats' ferocious political instincts which occurs at the time of the Black and Tans, (as evidenced by his poem 'Reprisals', a fine poem never before printed but here included), and then Foster's careful discussion of 'A Vision', which I have never read but intend to, and which is no doubt a summary of many of his beliefs.

As in the first volume Foster's approach is exhaustive and meticulous without being dry or disinterested. All his relationships are hung up to dry, but for me are perhaps less fascinating than in the earlier volume. The relationships which most interest me are those with Gonne, Synge and Gregory, and to some extent his wife; those that came later don't grab me and unless I'm missing something it is Synge and Gonne more than anyone who turn up again and again in his poetry throughout his life.

Roy Foster has lived up to the standard he set in the first volume of this biography. This is deeply researched, well-written, and wonderfully informative account of Yeats's life.

Descending from saints, emperors, kings, nobles and heroes, His Highness Prince Gharios of Ghassan Al-Nu'Man VIII or in Arabic Emir Gharios (Ibn Jafna) Al-Ghassani Al-Nu'Man VIII is a legitimate descendant of the Arab Christian Ghassanid Kings, heir of the Byzantine Emperors from the Nikephoros (Phocid) and Macedonian Dynasty and from the Christian Sheikhs Chemor from Lebanon. His ascendants ruled until 1747 AD as legitimate descendants of the Ghassanid Kings.
Also, Prince Gharios' rights and titles were recognized by the International Arbitration Award number 0413/2011 that, according with the Brazilian Federal Law number 9307/96 has the very same legal value as a Federal Court Verdict and according with the the "1958 NY Convention on Arbitration" is a legal binding court decision in 142 nations in the world. Even being already "res judicata" (matter already judged not subject to appeal) by Brazilian Law, the International Award was recognized and enforced by the Los Angeles Superior Court in February 2012.
Due to his duties, His Highness has studied the International Jurisprudence of Dynastic and Nobility Law. Being a scholar of many subjects since young age, his efforts rendered several Honorary Degrees, especially in Theological studies. Authored the only specific book about Dynastic and Nobility Law in English today ("The End of a Myth").
Never using his titles as "special leverage" Prince Gharios had a brilliant career in Entertainment in Brazil since 1994, in all areas: Movies, TV, Radio, Publishing, Music, Theater, etc. And recently established a second residence in Los Angeles, CA.
Is also a Master of Martial Arts being recently promoted to the 5th Dan (Degree of Black belt) in Aikido by his Master Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan 8th Dan and certificated by the Aikikai Foundation in Tokyo, Japan. Also holds black-belts in Karate and Kobudo (Japanese weapons).

A fascinating read

This well-written and well-researched book is so worthy; in spite of the vast amount of information presented here the book is not at all off-putting but is engaging and very easy to comprehend. It presents so much data on this topic which, to me, was mostly unfamiliar but is consistently presented concisely without talking down to the reader. It was hard to put down, actually! Most of us with any interest in nobility and royalty are often familiar with the workings of the most famous royal system, that of Great Britain. It would be natural to assume that all other royal dynasties operate similarly, with the same laws and rules. I found the differences fascinating, the history of the Ghassanid dynasty utterly surprising and intriguing and the legitimacy of HIRH Prince Gharios of Ghassan very well documented. I applaud the authors and look forward to any future works on this subject.

Amazing historical and legal work!

The subject is very interesting and there's a scarcity of available works in English. Hon. Judge Zvennia wrote a very important Foreword on titles vis a vis with the American Law. Also former Mexican Ambassador in Singapore and also jurist Eduardo Ramos endorses the book. I liked it.

About the Author

Neil T. Bendle is an Assistant Professor of Marketing at the Ivey Business School, Western University, Canada. He holds a PhD from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, and an MBA from Darden. He has been published in journals such as Marketing Science and the Journal of Consumer Research. He has nearly a decade’s experience in marketing management, consulting, business systems improvement, and financial management. He was responsible for measuring the success of marketing campaigns for the British Labour Party.

 

Paul W. Farris is Landmark Communications Professor and Professor of Marketing at The Darden Graduate Business School, University of Virginia, where he has taught since 1980. Previously he was on the faculty of the Harvard Business School and worked in marketing management for Unilever. Professor Farris’s research has produced award-winning articles on retail power, the measurement of advertising effects, and marketing budgeting. He has published many articles in journals such as the Harvard Business Review, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Advertising Research, and Marketing Science. He is currently developing improved techniques for integrating marketing and financial metrics and is coauthor of several books, including The Profit Impact of Marketing Strategy Project: Retrospect and Prospects. Farris’s consulting clients have ranged from Apple and IBM to Procter & Gamble and Unilever. He has also served on boards of manufacturers and retailers and as an academic trustee of the Marketing Science Institute.

 

Phillip E. Pfeifer, Richard S. Reynolds Professor of Business Administration at The Darden Graduate Business School, currently specializes in direct/interactive marketing. He has published a popular MBA textbook and more than 35 refereed articles in journals such as the Journal of Interactive Marketing, Journal of Database Marketing, Decision Sciences, and the Journal of Forecasting. In addition to academic articles and a textbook, Mr. Pfeifer is a prolific case writer, having been recognized in 2004 as the Darden School’s faculty leader in terms of external case sales, and in 2008 with a Wachovia Award for Distinguished Case Writer. His teaching has won student awards and has been recognized in Business Week’s Guide to the Best Business Schools. Recent consulting clients include Circuit City, Procter & Gamble, and CarMax.

 

Dr. David J. Reibstein is the William S. Woodside Professor and Professor of Marketing at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Dave has been on the Wharton Faculty for more than two decades. He was the Vice Dean of the Wharton School, and Director of the Wharton Graduate Division. In 1999-2001, Dave took a leave of absence from academia to serve as the Executive Director of the Marketing Science Institute. He previously taught at Harvard, and was a Visiting Professor at Stanford, INSEAD, and ISB (in India). Dave was the Chairman of the American Marketing Association. He has a radio show, Measured Thoughts with Dave Reibstein, on SiriusXM Radio.

This book is incredible for any start-up company. It's very comprehensive and will have your marketing team focused immediately on how to measure the marketing initiatives for your organization. Success resides not only in the collection of data but in the interpretation and decision making fueled by accurate and appropriate deployment of metrics as it pertains to the industry, customer demographics, goals/milestones, and desired outcomes. The only way to beat competitors and push your product/service to the top is to understand the market. The only way to understand the market is to fully comprehend what your data are telling you or not telling you for that matter. Great book, even better desk reference!

In today's data and measurement rich marketing environment, this book is an absolute must-have for marketers at all levels. It is the most comprehensive single source of information on all the important things a smart marketer would want to track, with helpful tips about how to use them. It is encyclopedic in coverage, yet it is so much more fun to read than an encyclopedia. You can leaf through the whole book and learn a ton, and then you find yourself (at least I do!) going back again and again to refer to specific metrics. Its a must-read book, but its even more valuable as a desk-reference. I have one copy at school and another in my home office. And I've given up on trying to return it to the book shelf -- I use it so often that it sits within easy reach on my table most of the time. And, I'm really delighted to see how much new stuff the authors have added in this newest edition -- on topics from online and mobile to neuroscience.

The One Resource Every CMO / Marketer Needs

As a former CMO, I bought the 1st edition of this book back in the early 2000's. It was the first book (and continues to be the best book) to combine all related marketing metrics in one resource. I now have all three editions (two in my home office and one at work). These books provide comprehensive information on a host of metrics that enable you to train your team about how to speak "finance-language" to the CFO/finance department. It is a reference book that essentially lists all marketing related terms, their definitions, and their calculations. On top of it, the more recent editions have some great survey data that provide insight on which marketing metrics marketers find the most valuable. I have been able to use this data to explain to non-marketers why some measures are more valid than others. In sum, I highly recommend these books as primary reference material for marketers and anybody working with marketers (e.g., finance, accounting, etc.).
