AN INDEPENDENT ANALYSIS OF THE EVIDENCE IN THE CASE

Co-author Donald Freed wrote in an introductory section of this 1996 book, “I was at Dulles International Airport … The ‘Fuhrman Tapes’ were being argued in the O.J. Simpson case… I muttered, ‘So they DID frame the right man.’ A man standing next to me said, ‘We may never know because the lawyers are controlling the scientific evidence instead of the other way around.’ Four hours later… Professor Raymond Briggs had … explain[ed] to me how it would be possible to get inside the real-time of the killings with the help of computer analysis, and to create a kind of virtual reality of the crime scene…” (Pg. xi)

They note, “the Prosecution would hint broadly that the bloody evidence had been carried to Chicago and back in Simpson’s Louis Vuitton suitcase, then taken away and disposed of by longtime Simpson friend and consultant Robert Kardashian. Yet, the police did not request the bag when they searched Kardashian’s home on June 17, made minimal legal motions but did not question or call Kardashian during trial, and at summation merely held up the empty case for the jury to see and speculate on.” (Pg. 46)

They point out, “Why was no vegetation disturbed in the area where the glove was found at Rockingham if someone jumped over the fence there? Why was no blood seen initially on the socks found in O.J.s bedroom? Why was no blood seen on the rear gate at Nicole’s residence until three weeks after the murders? Why was Detective Vannatter carrying around a vial of O.J.’s blood? Why was Ron Goldman’s blood not discovered in O.J.’s Bronco until months after the murders?” (Pg. 73)

They observe, “The Ford Bronco is a loud, powerful four-wheel drive vehicle that creates too much automotive sound to avoid attention, especially given the ambient context after 10:00 PM on a Sunday, and the headlight sightlines existing near the corner of Rockingham and Ashford, where [limo driver Allan] Park waited. Even if Park was inside the limousine off and on, telephoning, he could still have a view across the driveway to the Rockingham gate where the Bronco was later found parked. Our demonstration made it abundantly clear … that because the Bronco makes a very loud noise, it would be unlikely that the limousine driver would not have heard or seen its approach.” (Pg. 100)

They suggest, “conduct your own experiment:… take a pair of leather gloves and pour wine or blood from meat on them. Put one out in the night, on the ground, from about 11 PM to 5 AM, and put the other in a closed plastic container. Check both gloves after this six-hour period. We believe that you will find that the glove left outside will be dry, and that the one packaged in the container will be moist. The glove found at Rockingham was moist.” (Pg. 129)

They note, “Lipstick was found on Ron’s cheek. This suggests that Nicole kissed him as he came in. We know he had gone home to clean up after Mezzaluna, so presumably the lipstick from not from someone at the restaurant. If it was Nicole’s, it would have been placed there before the attack. This would mean that both were assaulted at once, and this strongly suggests two assassins.” (Pg. 131)

They explain, “It is compelling to note that… all of the timeline witnesses who function as clocks to virtually exclude O.J. Simpson from the crime scene and the killing time--- believe that he is guilty: Pilnak, Park, Heidstra, Kaelin, Shively, ‘Jane Jones,’ and the other neighbors. Except for Park, all of these were declared hostile witnesses by the Prosecution, and none of them could understand why.” (Pg. 133)

They state, “Dr. Irwin Golden, the L.A. Deputy Coroner who had performed the autopsies, stated on direct exam in the preliminary trial that there were ‘two morphologically different types of stab wounds on the victims.’ Some, he said, were indicative of a single-edge blade, while others had a characteristically double-pointed or forked end. This meant that the wounds could have been made by two different weapons, which in turn suggests the possibility of two killers.” (Pg. 187)

They conclude, “instead of searching for who is to blame, this study has attempted to pursue the facts, and develop a new way to reach the truth. For the ‘facts,’ we have offered a summary of the trial and some of what our investigation has learned; for the way to the truth we have offered our competing scenarios and timelines. The rest we leave to you, the jury. The search goes on.” (Pg. 251)

The authors’ purported emphasis upon the “evidence” is mildly refreshing, but overall their claims to avoid reaching conclusions while supporting various alternative theories are not very persuasive. Those interested in the criminal trial may find their listings of evidence, and particularly their analysis of various “timelines,’ to be helpful.

Killing Time

Donald Freed is a historian, dramatist, and novelist. Raymond P. Briggs is a visual and cognitive scientist. Most of the books on this double murder were written by those who were involved with the trial. This is the first book with an outside and objective viewpoint. It contains the Autopsy Reports (but most would not understand the medical terms). The `Acknowledgments' thank all those who helped. The `Prologue' has a time-line for the events from June 1994 to October 1995. Technology affects political questions (the Zapruder film, the Pentagon Papers, the Watergate Tapes, the Rodney King Videotape).

Chapter 1 has the Prosecution's case, their story of the crime. Could a barking dog time an event? [No, dogs can't testify in court.] The Prosecution could not find an expert in the field of spousal abuse to testify for them (p.40). There was no proof that OJ ever owned a pair of Bruno Magli shoes. Witnesses contradicted the time of the murders (p.54). Chapter 2 has the Defense's arguments to challenge the Prosecution and suggest reasonable doubt (p.59). The Defense time-line is on pages 60 to 62. Many fingerprints at the murder scene did not match OJ (p.66). Neither did some blood samples. The Contested Evidence is listed on pages 69 to 72. The EDTA found on the socks and gate suggest evidence planted from the blood sample. The various time-lines are listed on pages 70 to 83, along with their problems. Bot the prosecution and defense claimed the murders occurred at 10:30 to 10:45pm! The limo driver saw no activity at OJ's compound at this time so it provides an alibi (p.85). "The gloves didn't fit" (p.89), they had Caucasian limb hair inside. The so-called "educated and professional classes" believed in the shoddy DNA evidence (p.90)! The limo driver's presence provided an alibi for OJ (p.104). If there is "something wrong" with the Prosecution and Defense scenarios then there must be another explanation (p.109).

Chapter 3 discusses alternate scenarios. The Prosecution's claims were not supported by missing evidence (p.110). Was there a "second man"? There is Unexplained Evidence (pp.127-131). The witnesses near Bundy gave testimony that excluded OJ as the murderer (p.133). Were there two killers (p.138)? Were drugs the cause of the murder (Chapter 4)? Was someone stalking Nicole (p.146)? Was there a threat to Ron (p.149)? Were drugs involved (p.151)? Was organized crime involved (p.166)? Chapter 5 discusses other killers, such as serial killer Glen Rogers (p.175). Were there two killers (p.177)? The failure to call the coroner prevented a better estimate of time of death (p.189). Chapter 6 discusses Mark Fuhrman's history. He found a moist-looking bloody glove at 6:06am (p.211) and had other activities (p.212). How did that one glove go from the murder scene to OJ's house? How did blood get into the Bronco (p.217)? [That Sherlock Holmes' case is "Silver Blaze" (p.219).] There is a short definition of the Black Dahlia Murder Case (p.222). The Singular manuscript contained information that could destroy the Prosecution's case (p.226). Chapter 7 says OJ was warned to "take Nicole and the children away" earlier (p.231). There are unanswered questions (p.232). What if Ron Goldman was the target and Nicole the innocent bystander (p.248)?

The Appendices cover ten subjects. The time-lines assume the murders occurred between 10pm and 11pm. This is not true. The blood of the victims would have been black and clotted when the bodies were found by the police at 12:15am. The red liquid blood suggests the murders took place about 11:30 to 11:40pm. A passing couple saw Nicole's body at 11:45. [The book "Forty Whacks" can tell you this, its about an older double murder.] Ron's height, weight, and age made him resemble Nicole's boy friend, another possible target. He went into hiding for months afterwards and was never questioned by the police or at the trial. [Page numbers refer to the hardcover edition.]

Use your brain - transform your experience with chronic pain!

These authors are taking effective chronic pain management to a whole new level. This book describes an exciting and effective approach to managing chronic pain beyond just the use of medication. You can use your own brain's ability to change and correct itself back to its natural state by employing a myriad of techniques described in book that challenge the unrelenting pain signals. Over time, and with practice, you gain control of your experience with pain so that you can work on returning to a more normal life. I have lived with chronic pain for years - at times, in levels of severity that made it hard to want to keep living. I am a functioning person today, with a job, a family, yet still struggle with chronic degenerative pain issues. But I have hope! I use every single non-drug resource described in this book to challenge my pain rather than just giving in ( and giving up). My pain is significantly less, and I am empowered. These methods work!

Expected Much More for $48

I was disappointed with the content and format of this book. I wouldn't really call it a workbook. It is more a collection of statements regarding neuroscience, and one sentence suggestions. But there is really no training procedure. For $48 I had expected an excellent book. I have recommended The Chronic Pain Care Workbook (New Harbringer $20 Amazon) for my patients for many years and they have found it to be very helpful. Also, the The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook by New Harbringer has helped many patients as well.

Helpful research, but disappointed at editorial quality of book.

This book was recommended to me by a heath-care practitioner. I'm a chronic pain patient, very active in my self-care and pain management. So I was excited at the prospect of a workbook that might help me apply some of the newest research on pain and the brain. It's particularly helpful when I have some structure around this. I am disabled and on a fixed income, so $48 was a lot for me to consider paying. But I am a believer in neuroplasticity's ability to help heal my brain, so I ordered it right away.

When I received it, though, I was disappointed. Most of the graphics and lessons were familiar to me--in fact many of them are available via the website. Most of the new material seemed to be lists of suggested actions from other pain patients. I didn't find many exercises for me to include in my daily practice. Also, the book seems to be just printouts from the website bound together, without any of the additional editorial work that I would expect from a product being marketed as a book.

While a lot of this material is helpful, and I suspect for many folks it is new and exciting, I was disappointed to basically receive a hardcopy of the website. The authors have done a lot of important work in helping us understand how we experience chronic pain, and I don't begrudge their profiting from their research. But I am sorry I paid $48 for this book.

I had an opportunity to ready and review this book even before I purchased it at Amazon.com. The book is very well thought out, easy to find the answers to specific restoration and concours questions and filled with specific picture examples.
This book is a must library addition for any owner of the Austin Healey marque both for reference and the enjoyment of reading about interesting insights into the history of the cars and the people who were the inspiration behind the production of the cars.

IF and only IF . . .

If and ONLY if you are actively restoring a "Big Healey" for concours, this is a very useful book. When the authors call it a "restoration guide" they mean something very specific. Concours fanatics care about things like plating on screw heads, and the texture of wire loom tape. This book is crammed full of such stultifyingly dull minutae. It's powerful in the hands of a concours restorer, but almost useless if you're a shade tree mechanic trying to figure out how to replace a rusty fender. For everyone else it's guaranteed instant somnulence. Try and read any 5 pages of this book. I guarantee you you're snoring before you've turned two pages. But again, if you're a Healey concours fanatic, this is your book, man. Read it, live it, love it.

This bood is as good as it gets

I have to say this is probably one of the single best restoration guides written for any car. Extensively researched it will give you everything you need to know to do a award winning restoration of the Big Healey. It doesn't really go into mechanical restoration because that's what the shop manual is for - this book covers all the little trim, paint and various details not covered in any other book. This book is absolutely fantastic.

First ever compendium of Capote's short stories

I believe a lot of people have forgotten or don't know that Truman Capote, in addition to being a brilliant novelist, was a gifted short story writer. I still remember when I read "Miriam" in my junior high school literature book. Later, I started reading all of Capote's stories and I eventually stumbled upon my all time favorite short story (of any writer) - "Children on Their Birthdays" ("Yesterday afternoon the six-o'clock bus ran over Miss Bobbit.") "A Christmas Memory" is another all time favorite and one of the most touching stories I've ever read. Capote was a master at using the English language - his words are simple, elegant, beautiful and most memorable.

An outstanding volume containing Capote's superb short tales

It has been just over twenty years since Truman Capote --- the controversial and tiny, child-voiced man of a mega-writer who needs no introduction --- left this life, yet his work still resonates with the deadly Southern charm of making love to a sexy stranger during a sudden summer downpour.

A reader must make his or her own way in these lonely Alabama and Louisiana evenings, accompanied by diamond guitars, lost ladies, circus freaks, childhood bullies, soda shops, society types, emerging sexualities, bad parents, great Christmases, train rides, fearful hidings, fatal romances, poverty, big city scams, eccentric artists, identity issues, and the broken American dreams that populate the twenty eerie stories in this collection.

It is in the early autobiographical stories, published in ladies' magazines between 1943 and 1956, when Capote was first flexing his muscles as a fiction and journalistic talent, which offer an inspirational yet heartbreaking glance into the author's early years. From rural Mobile to spectacular New York, Capote repeatedly employs the devices of the weathered mink that must be sold, the beautiful guitar that calms the savages, the alluring yet dangerous stranger, and, most importantly, the creative prison every artist endures at the hands of a planet mismanaged by religion, accountants, gossip, brutes and thieves.

It is the realization of imprisonment without parole or escape --- a theme the author would lustfully follow until his greatest nonfiction success, IN COLD BLOOD, and his greatest failure, addiction to fame and drugs --- that Capote most poignantly explored in his pre-diva years. It was a hungry, optimistic young writer headed for New York who created "The Shape of Things," "Miriam," "My Side of the Matter," "Preacher's Legend," "The Headless Hawk," "Master Misery" and "A Diamond Guitar."

In "The Shape of Things," from 1944, two women and a soldier on a train are the polite captives of a second, disheveled, drunk-appearing soldier who is headed home after wartime experience and the unmentionable shellshock. Meanwhile, the title character of Miriam enters a widow's house and mind, and refuses to leave. In "My Side of the Matter," from 1945, a narrator resembling Capote himself becomes a prisoner to a wife and her family. "Master Misery" steals and imprisons the dreams of fragile New York émigrés. Preacher, an old Southern black man, becomes a prisoner in his own home at the mercy of two hunters appearing as saints. The diamond guitar is the showpiece of a man in prison.

In addition to the savagely bared souls of each character, it is the richness of the musical writing that seduces and even teaches: "In the country, spring is a time of small happenings happening quietly, hyacinth shoots thrusting in the garden, willows burning with a sudden frosty fire of green, lengthening afternoons of long flowing dusk, and midnight rain opening lilac; but in the city there is the fanfare of organ-grinders, and odors, undiluted by winter wind, clog the air; windows long closed go up, and conversation, drifting beyond a room, collides with the jangle of a peddler's bell."

Up to the final story from 1982, the invisible prison theme is carried through most tales in the collection, yet is untouched by Reynolds Price, the respected Southern author who provides an all-too-brief introduction (just six pages [with one that includes Price's half-page biography], which fail to mention several of the most important stories) to this volume. Price irresponsibly laments, "America has never been a land of readers," a trite complaint embraced by a publishing world that always forgets the country has more readers, libraries, bookstores, and Internet book sales than nearly any other on earth.

Also, much to the chagrin of any dedicated bibliophile, missing is a list of where these stories first appeared; instead there is a useless list of copyright dates. To remedy the problems, readers are advised to seek OTHER VOICES, OTHER ROOMS, Capote's first novel, as well as CAPOTE by Gerald Clarke and TRUMAN CAPOTE by George Plimpton, both fine and revealing biographies of the writer.

While later editions of this startling and romantic must-have collection could be smartly pared of Price's seemingly dashed-off-at-the-last-minute introduction (he actually compares Hemingway's fame to Capote's), and enhanced by proper publishing credits, this book serves as, to today's literary marketplace, the unseen Capote --- a number of beautiful stories published decades before Capote was at his best, an exciting introduction to a career unmatched in talent and literary impact.

Some Great Short Stories

This volume contains the nineteen stories that Truman Capote published, plus "The Bargain", a story never before published.

Reynolds Price, in his introduction, states that Hemingway and Capote are the ". . . only two writers of distinguished fiction . . . to become American household names." The comparisons with Hemingway go further, I think, than that. Both writers produced their best work by age forty or so, and both, at that point, exhibited increasingly bizarre and self-destructive behavior, becoming celebrities more than writers. Capote was forty when he published In Cold Blood in 1965, and he produced very little work at all after that. Only three of the stories here were written after 1960.

So we have seventeen stories dated from 1943, when Capote was eighteen or nineteen, to 1960, plus three later stories. As Price notes, several of the earlier stories betray the influence of his earlier contemporaries and fellow southerners Eudora Welty and Carson McCullers. Yet even in many of these, Capote's voice is his own. "Children on Their Birthdays", for example, is a marvelous story.

Taken as a whole, this collection is a reminder of what a great writer Capote was and what a tragedy it was that his muse abandoned him so early.

Quality reference

I bought a copy of this classic textbook after checking it out of the library. As a practicing engineer, I had an undergraduate course in probability, with virtually no statistics (there is a difference). This title, while providing an excellent but cursory treatment on probability, is generous with statistical theory. Many statistics books for engineers are "cookbook" in nature: here's a problem or hypothesis, here's the relevant test statistic, here's its tabulated distribution, here's an example. While these kinds of texts are excellent for bootstrapping self study and practical problem solving, this title provides more. I have continually found it to be a powerful reference by elucidating details that I have not picked elsewhere in self study, thus filling in many gaps in my knowledge of statistics. The theoretical expositions have allowed me to write my own programs to calculate P-values for hypothesis testing for some fairly specialized tests (freeing me from the dependence upon tables).
It's scope is fairly broad, crammed with many basic statistical tests that I have found scattered among many other books. It was designed for a 3 semester course and assumes the reader has knowledge of differential calculus. The title is a reprint of a 1965 2nd edition. Surprisingly for its age, it has chapters on nonparameteric testing, as well as tests of randomness, and I have not found its age to be particularly detrimental. At 600 pages, the reader is sometimes left wanting just a little bit more information. The references cited at the ends of each chapter have been gold mines of additional information (but one needs a library with access to pre-60's statistical journals.) There are student exercises with partial answers in the appendix.
I recommend this text as a fairly comprehensive, secondary reference to the practicing engineering or scientist who wants to not only apply statistical procedures to his research, but also to better understand them.

About the Author
Norman Lewis (1908-2003) was one of the greatest English-language travel writers. He was the author of thirteen novels and fourteen works of nonfiction, including "Naples '44", "The Tomb in Seville", and "Voices of the Old Sea". Lewis served in the Allied occupation of Italy during World War II, and reported from Mafia-ruled Sicily and Vietnam under French-colonial rule, among other locations. Born in England, he traveled extensively, living in places including London, Wales, Nicaragua, a Spanish fishing village, and the countryside near Rome.

Judicious balance, enticing introduction.

I personally prefer Lewis' "Word Power" books, but I've noticed students do not stay with them--due to the length as well as piling on of information, especially etymological details. The present volume, on the other hand, represents an optimal compromise between comprehensiveness and depth. Lewis' progressive exercises help motivate the reader and provide a sense of accomplishment. Recommended for anyone who wishes to sharpen grammatical and vocabulary skills. Moreover, Lewis shows sufficient awareness of the differences between "prescriptive" and "descriptive" usage to be acceptable to traditionalist as well as modern grammarians.

Bought this for a person whose first language is not English. It has been very helpful for his pronunciation. Studying the roots of words has aided him in understanding meanings as he reads. The only complaint is that sometimes the author's language is stilted.
