About the Author
During their long collaboration, Laurie Kirszner and Stephen Mandell have written a number of best-selling college texts for Bedford/St. Martin's, including Patterns for College Writing, Foundations First, Writing First, Focus on Writing, and, most recently, Practical Argument. Laurie Kirszner is a Professor of English at the University of the Sciences, where she has taught composition, literature, creative writing, and scientific writing, and served as coordinator of the first-year writing program. All this missing content; not even the same book

Don't even bother buying this for your kindle or other mobile device. I don't even know why a "short" version of a textbook exists. I am halfway through my semester, and I have stumbled across many occasions where my professor required me to read parts of the book that I don't even have. It is missing content not just because it is a short version, but because it is an electronic book. There are missing essays that are taken out, "... due to digital permissions/copyright issues." I now regret entirely buying this version of the book to save money. This is a great book, but this version is something you should only buy if your purpose in reading the book is strictly to read the chapters.

Good textbook

I needed this textbook for a dual enrollment college class my senior year in high school, and it turned out to be very helpful. It teaches you all of the proper formatting, grammar, etc, and really helped me and still continues to help as I move through college.

The eBook only works on my iPhone and not my tablet which has the kindle app. Additionally, this book only goes up to chapter 17 because it is the short version. Just read carefully before purchasing because it's linked on the same page as the full text, which is a little misleading?

A must read for java developers who wants to learn Objective-C

I've been programming with Java since 1998. It's a nice language/platform with automatic garbage collection and a rich set of 3rd party APIs and libraries. However, the introduction of iPhone changed the world, and I wanted to develop some apps for iPhone. Since iPhone does not support Java as their development language, I had to learn Objective-C. Even though I learned some C/C++ back from college days, Objective-C is still quite foreign to me. It's a bit frustrating to Google and searching through Apple's documentation to find something equivalent (that works in Java) to be used in Objective-C. After many fruitless searches and frustration, I thought I might never learn Objective-C. Then this book was released and I grabbed a copy. After reading it, I truly wish this book was available earlier so I didn't waste so much time searching blindly in Google.

James did a wonderful job bring Java and Objective-C comparison side by side. But keep in mind, no single book can cover EVERYTHING between Java and Objective-C. There are obviously certain things missing but for the most part, it covers many grounds between Java and Objective-C.

Part 1 - Language
Chapeter 1-7 give you some nice introduction to Objective-C, and along the way, comparing with Java, and gradually feeds you more and more Objective-C features. Chapter 5 on Protocols and Categories is very nice, but I wish it was much longer. Protocols and Categories are very powerful features in Objective-C. They alone deserve a whole book ;)

Part 2 - Translating Technologies
Chapter 8-15 touches on many fundamentals of both languages, Strings and primitive values, Garbage Collection, Introspection, Files, Serialization, Exception Handling and Threads. The author shows us side-by-side code snippets comparison between Java and Objective-C. This alone is invaluable to us readers. There are some mind-bending situations where you will say: why it's so different? and makes you feel confused and puzzled. Then if you read up Apple's official documentation, and explore the APIs further, you will realize why things are in certain way in Objective-C. Definitely lots of learning there.

Part 3 - Programming Patterns
Chapter 16-23 shows the readers some common programming and design patterns in both language flavors. Collection pattern, Delegation pattern (lots of Objective-C APIs are through the use of delegation), Provider/Subscriber pattern, Observer Pattern(you will find how easy it is to setup observers in your program), MVC, Lazy Initialization, Factory, and our favorite Singleton pattern.
Of course, there are many more patterns that are not covered here, but these basic patterns are enough to get you started. Again, patterns alone warrants a whole 900-page book, so hopefully something comes out soon.

Part 4 - Advanced Objective-C
Chapter 24-26 deals with memory management, mixing c and objective-c, and runtime.
Memory management is especially important in iPhone SDK since so far iPhone SDK does not support automatic garbage collection. So all the memory allocations you have in the codes must be taken care of. Mixing C and Objective-C is very interesting, it should be very helpful for gaming development, where in many cases, involves game engines written in C.

Overall, it's a solid book for Java developers who want to dive into Objective-C.
You might need to read it a few times to fully understand certain topics.
It's a good reference book as well if you want to look up something quick in Objective-C but you only know how to do that in Java.

Ok..but...!

I am a java developer and I rushed to buy this book after finding this title on the web. I was hoping that the transition from Java to Objective C would be very easy.
But here is my opinion:
I started reading this book and found that the first few chapters were ok..but eventually stopped reading since I felt like there is lot of new information about Objective C the author is trying to say in single section in multiple places. It took me a lot of time understanding some of the concepts because of the above reason.
I bought this because I thought I could leverage my Java knowledge and come upto speed on Objective C. Though there are comparisons of Syntax between Java and Objective-C then and there, I felt it not very useful to leverage the Java concepts easily. There weren't enough detailed explanation of the examples whenever there are new concepts.

Instead I tried the following:
Googled and took a free online crash course in C which took a day of my time.
Then I started reading the book 'Learn Objective C on the Mac' by the same publisher. I loved the book. The book teaches the objective C concepts step by step and with detailed explanation of concepts incrementally.

Now, I am continue to stick with the second book and learning Objective C

I needed this book a year ago, but am thrilled it is finally here

Being a Java developer for more than 10 years and having explored the Objective-C platform for iPhone development for more than the last year, I struggled in the early days. I longed for a document that spoke to me, the Java emigre, and helped me map my existing knowledge into this new field of development. Finally, such a book has hit the shelves in the form of James Bucanek's Learn Objective-C for Java Developers.

James warns us that direct comparisons between these languages are insufficient, but acknowledges it gives us a great common vocabulary to start with. Once the comparisons have been drawn and as we become comfortable on the Objective-C language, James takes us beyond Obj-C as Java and shows the dynamism of this unique platform. We progress through memory management, persistence, and other platform specific critical technologies, learning each from James in a very friendly tutorial-style manner.

The book ends in a fevered pitch with an overview of mixing C and Obj-C. Overall, I was very pleased with the book, primarily because it spoke to me as a Java developer, and second because the writing style was very digestible. I highly recommend this book to any Java developer moving to the iPhone platform.

Don't start with this text

I learned Latin first using Wheelock, one of the standard texts available today for Latin instruction; I have used other grammars, readers and texts since then, and seem to pick up another volume every other year or so, just to keep up the practice, and to see what else is available. I purchased 'Latin Made Simple' by Hendricks some time prior to my Latin instruction using Wheelock, but had not used it; it sat on the shelf waiting to be read, but I must confess, I hadn't got round to it prior to my classes in Latin.
When I picked it up off the shelf to use it to help refresh my Latin several years later, I found it a mixed bag. I liked the fact that it addressed topics such as Church Latin (Wheelock is primarily for classical -- Republic or Imperial - Latin), and found many of the examples more relevant to my needs as a churchy person. I also liked some of the page layouts for verb conjugations and noun declensions, and some other grammar points.
However, there are many typographical errors here, and several problems I noticed even with my then-rusty Latin. Some of the verb conjugations did not match with the guide to Latin Verbs I used as a companion. Checking against Wheelock and Henle, I found that Hendrick's text was indeed incorrect. While this is probably more of an editorial problem than an author's shortcoming, it still reflects badly on the text (as the student won't in general care if the problem comes from the editor or the author, but rather takes what is on the page).
Since this is a book designed primarily for those who have not had any Latin training, identifying the errors is not really possible for most readers (this is a bad thing). Also, since this is a book designed for the absolute beginner, many of the issues are presented in the most simple format possible -- the problem here is that Latin is a very complex language, and there are many exceptions to almost every rule -- the presentation here doesn't really prepare the student for the variations, leading to a bit of confusion.
I found this book useful as a review, but could not really recommend it as a beginning text.

Latin Over-simplified

This book's teaching method is great, but it is ruined by its over-simplification of the language. Its very concise pronunciation guide says that everything is pronounced as in English with a few exceptions. It gives very few consonants and a few diphthongs and explains them. It does not say anything about the varied pronunciation for long and short vowels. It also does not mention that the R is trilled as in romance languages, which would lead one to believe that it just as the English R (The English pronunciation of R is unique and found nowhere else). This book is good for its comparisons to English, for each word it usually gives you a related English word (you could find which syllables are long from an etimological dictionary). It also has little stories and excerpts from the Latin bible throughout. Sadly, this book stops giving the pronunciation of each word after the first chapter which leaves the reader feeling naked and insecure especially since the stress of the word depends on which syllables are long (when this book does not mark the vowels as long or short like most latin instruction books). In conclusion, this is great if you already have a Latin dictionary that explains pronunciation and stress, but don't buy this book as a sole source or you'll not learn Latin correctly.

Latin Made Simple, Student Made Confused

This being my first Latin text, I cannot vouch for its correctness in Latin context--although it seems by the other reviews that this book has some consistent shortcomings in that area. However, as a student of other foreign languages(Spanish, French, and Japanese previously), I can decidedly say that the presentation in this book is confusing at best. The beginning chapters are filled with "this is one way to do it" explanations that are later contradicted with the correct (?) method. Teaching someone how to do something incorrectly for the mere purpose of simplification is an absolutely useless practice which should be stopped immediately. I would NOT recommend using this book as a learning aid without a Latin-fluent companion to help "fix" the book.

Hutchinson tracks the resulting transformation of literary institutions and organizations in the 1920s, offering a detailed account of the journals and presses, black and white, that published the work of the "New Negroes." This cultural excavation discredits bedrock assumptions about the motives of white interest in the renaissance, and about black relationships to white intellectuals of the period. It also allows a more careful investigation than ever before of the tensions among black intellectuals of the 1920s. Hutchinson's analysis shows that the general expansion of literature and the vogue of writing cannot be divorced from the explosion of black literature often attributed to the vogue of the New Negro--any more than the growing sense of "Negro" national consciousness can be divorced from expanding articulations and permutations of American nationality. The best in one of the best series

I got several of the "Feeling" books for my son when he was two, and I've simply not found a better series for discussing various emotions. The beauty is in the simplicity of the sentences -- it keeps the concepts clear so that a toddler can understand them, while leaving plenty of room for discussion with your older child. The illustrations demonstrate the ideas on each page vary well, and are great for asking questions with your toddler on what's happening in the pages and how the characters are feeling.

What I said above is true of all of the books, but the reason why I'm writing my review on this one, the "Kind" one, is because it was my son's favorite. He was very taken with the illustrations, and how to be kind to others. I still remember the day I went to pick him up and he excitedly exclaimed, "I was KIND!" when I heard about what a good day he had. If you don't get any of the other books in this series, get this one.

This is a very useful introductory book on marine botany, covering most general aspects of marine botanical taxonomy, physiology and ecology, as well as a most useful chapter on the economic importance of several algae. I strongly recommend this book to undergraduates in marine biology and ecology courses, and hopefully expect a second edition will soon be published.
